Three Chance Pieces for Piano were written in Bülach, in January 1981 but lay fallow until performed for Radio New Zealand by Hugh Stevenson in December 1983. At that time I was struck by the necessity for a fourth piece—a piece which would be as long as the other three together and which would function as a synthesis of the first three and as a finale to the whole set.
These pieces were played by Dominik Blum several times, in particular for the concert of my works in Pushkin, near St. Petersburg in 1995.
The details of the chance procedures are treated in some detail in Themes/Chance
